Decade Counter - CD4017

The CD4017 is a versatile integrated circuit renowned for its utility in various counting applications and LED projects. With 10 decoded outputs, it provides flexibility and functionality in sequential counting tasks.

Pin Configuration of CD4017:

  • Output Pins (Q0 to Q9): These 10 pins facilitate the counting process, generating sequential outputs.
  • Ground (Vss): Connected to the ground of the circuit.
  • Carry Out (CO): Goes high after counting from 1 to 10, serving as carry while counting.
  • Clock Enable (EN): When high, hold the count at the current state.
  • Clock: Initiates counting when receiving a high pulse.
  • Reset: Resets the count back to 1.
  • Supply Voltage (Vdd/Vcc): Typically connected to +5V.

Package Types:
The CD4017 is available in through-hole (PDIP-16, CDIP-16) and SMD packages (SOIC-16, SOP-16, TSSOP-16), catering to diverse application needs.

Features of CD4017:

  • High-speed CMOS decade counter (16-pin).
  • Supports 10 decoded outputs.
  • Wide supply voltage range (3V to 15V), typically operated at +5V.
  • TTL compatible.
  • Maximum clock frequency: 5.5MHz.

Equivalent Counters: IC4040, IC4060, IC4022

Applications:

The CD4017 finds extensive use in:

  • LED matrix and chaser projects.
  • Binary counting and decoding.
  • Divide-by-N counting.
  • Remote metering, automotive, and medical electronics.

How to Use CD4017:
The CD4017 operates within the 3V to 15V voltage range, with Vdd/Vcc connected to the positive supply and Vss to ground. Its 10 output pins are utilized for sequential counting tasks, often connected to LEDs. Counting is initiated by applying a clock pulse, typically generated by a timer circuit or microcontroller such as Arduino, PIC etc. With each clock pulse, the count progresses from 0 to 9, resetting to 0 after reaching 9. The counting behavior can be controlled using the Clock Enable and Reset pins. Additionally, the Carry Out pin facilitates extending the counting sequence or triggering other events when the count reaches 10.

Working Principle:
Upon power application, CD4017(working video) typically resets to output 0. With each rising clock edge, the output advances sequentially. For instance, if output 0 is high, a clock pulse will transition it low and activate output 1. This process continues until output 9, which resets the count back to 0. The Reset pin can be utilized to reset the counter at any point, while the Carry Out pin aids in extending the counting sequence or triggering external events.

In summary, the CD4017 offers a reliable and efficient solution for various counting applications, providing seamless sequential counting capabilities with its versatile features and straightforward operation.
